Character Motivation: Yugi is the vessel of the Pharaoh - when he completed an ancient relic called the Millennium Puzzle, the spirit of an ancient Pharaoh began to posses him whenever he or his friends were in danger. At first, he was unaware of his presence, but as they became aware of each other as two separate entities instead of just a "different part" of himself, Yugi's primary goal was keeping the Pharaoh locked away for the safety of others after he almost killed a rival in order to save his Grandfather. Slowly, the spirit of the Pharaoh earned his trust and promised to respect his wishes. After they became friends, Yugi's primary goal of the series was finding out who the spirit actually was in life and finding a way to return his memories to him. Even though fate dictates this, Yugi acts less out of expectation and more out of loyalty to the spirit as a friend: he wants him to find peace.

Another strong motivation is the well-being of his friends in general. He's the target of many bullies while in school, and while he's more or less used to taking a beating, he can't stand his friends getting hurt. Even when he's physically unable to protect them, he still stands in the way of the bully and his friends, fully expecting to take the blow. Once he completes the Millennium Puzzle, the spirit of the Puzzle feeds off of that protective nature, and unlike Yugi, can often do something to protect his friends from harm. Even when the odds are basically impossible, Yugi will do everything he can to help his friends and keep them safe.

Personality: Yugi Mutou is a kind young man with a big heart who is braver than he believes he is. He starts the series as a meek player in the game of life, very self-deprecating and not expecting to get out of day-to-day life unscathed, usually literally. In his school where physical prowess is valued above anything else, his short stature and shy ways make him an obvious target.

He is also very lonely. He was told that when he completed the Millennium Puzzle, it could grant a wish, and his one wish was to have true friends. For years, Yugi believed that it was the artifact that ended up granting this wish, when it reality, it was his brave and selfless acts that ended up earning that friendship. He stood up for two other boys in his class who had bullied him, and he got badly injured in the process. His friends recognized that selfless act and ended up returning that loyalty ten-fold. In truth, that's probably Yugi's biggest power: he will always believe there is good in you, and in the end, will forgive you. Almost every enemy he made during the course of the run ended up later becoming friendly with him. Yugi is loyal and forgiving, almost to a fault. although he would never see it that way. In the end, the boy who sat alone during lunch ended up with a group of friends that spanned across countries, and that had everything to do with how open and kind he chose to be in the face of violence and hatred.

Finally, Yugi is brave, even though it takes a long time for him to believe he is. He doesn't subscribe to the kind of masculinity he's expected to live up to, one that's based on machismo and pride and, often, violence, so he thinks he's not meeting the standards of a hero like his friends do. He thinks that the Spirit of the Puzzle is the real hero, when the fact is, it was his kindness and moral compass that set the Spirit on the right path, and he says as much to him many times. He's had to face many challenges on his own without the help of the spirit, proving his bravery isn't reliant on him.

Canon Strength/Weaknesses: The Millennium Puzzle doesn't give him any supernatural abilities other than a mental connection with the Spirit of the Puzzle, and is otherwise an ordinary human boy.

Strengths:
- Mental Prowess & Strategy: Yugi has been dubbed the King of Games many times over, and after defeating the Spirit in a final duel, he is unquestioningly the best duelist in the world. Yugi has always loved and thrived on games, and even though the games he has to play against his enemies aren't usually, um, fun, he has never lost a game in his life yet. When no lives are at stake, he loves being challenged and finding ways around puzzles and traps. In fact, Yugi is the only person to ever complete the Millennium Puzzle, and as a kid at that.

- Faith: Not so much in a religious sense, but he has faith in the Heart of the Cards - the inherit belief that no game is ever truly lost until the fat lady sings - and he has faith in people. This faith can be taken advantage of and be seen as gullibility, but even if he is used, his belief that people can change for the better almost always ends up making a positive impact on whoever tried to use him. Above all, he has faith in his friends.

- Bravery: A double-edged sword, as bravery usually is, but Yugi always throws himself on the front lines when his friends are in danger and isn't afraid to face them down directly. He doesn't consider himself brave, but in actuality, he's never run away from a fight when something important is at sake.

Weaknesses:
- Self-Doubt & Lack of Self-Esteem: Yugi starts off the series thinking very little of himself, and it takes him almost the entire series to realize that he is a hero in his own right, and not just the vessel of the Pharaoh. He often cuts himself down, not expecting anyone to take an interest in him. Many villains reinforce this belief that he is ultimately unimportant in the grant scheme of destiny, but in reality, Yugi might be the most important key to the puzzle: the Spirit would still be lost of the darkness if not for his kindness.

- Lack of Self-Preservation: Tying into above, Yugi sacrifices himself many times throughout the run, almost always for the life of someone else. His "soul", for lack of a better term, is temporarily destroyed so his friends can survive, specifically the Spirit and his best friend Joey Wheeler. He also stayed in a burning house and almost died because he refused to leave the Puzzle unfinished and the Spirit trapped. While it can be seen as selfless, these acts are also founded on the belief that he's not as important as his friends are. He's not suicidal, exactly, but he definitely thinks his life is worth less than those around him.

- Anger: This is something we don't see a lot directly from Yugi, but it's important to remember that for a long time, the Spirit only acted when Yugi was angry. It was the Spirit who ultimately carried out those violent acts, but it was specifically Yugi's anger at the mistreatment of his friends that started the Spirit down a dangerous path with Shadow Games.

Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Honestly, I think the Prince/Princess class probably fits him best. Yugi is proven to be the heart of his group of friends, his kindness and selflessness being the factor that brought them all together. Even though he sometimes doubts his own bravery, he doesn't hesitate to do what's right and to help his friends whenever he can. His kindness is ultimately his greatest strength.
Prince/Princess: I think Yugi would ultimately use his spell and magic cards to heal people, if that makes sense in this universe.

Sample Section

First Person Sample:

Hey everyone! ( A young man with remarkably multi-colored hair stares into the mirror and gives an awkward wave. He's smiling, but after a second, he pauses, then brings the screen right up to his eyes. )

Did they say this was a video phone kinda thing? I wasn't... really paying close attention. ( A lame laugh is heard. ) In my defense, there was a lot to take in, okay!

( He readjusts the camera to a proper distance, and then tries again, little wave and all. ) Sorry - sorry! Hi! This is kind of like a chatboard, right? Okay. Um... yeah. I'm Yugi Mutou.

I haven't faced this exact kind of thing before, but I've faced something similar. I actually have no idea how much I can help. The guy who usually... helps, he's gone.

( A beat passes, and the young man's violet eyes look distant. But he snaps back and looks at the camera, offering his most reassuring smile. )

But whatever I can do, I will! That's a promise.

Third Person Sample:

There's a lot to figure out, that's for sure. There's a lot... going on in this place, but after virtual realities, Ancient Egypt and the Shadow Realm, nothing is impossible to Yugi any more.

The most distressing fact is that his friends are nowhere to be found. He fiddles with his jacket lapels at the thought – are they trapped somewhere else? Or are they just at home? He really hopes it’s the latter… though if he’s honest with himself, he’d like to not be completely alone in this place, even if that makes him kind of selfish.

At least Main Street is cute. It isn’t anything like Domino, with its skyscrapers and city streets. Main Street is quaint; that’s the word, right? Did all of America look like this? He absentmindedly swings a leg under the bench he’s sitting on, then unconsciously looks again down the road for any familiar faces.

But then, his stomach growls. Loudly, in fact. Yugi blushes and bolts up from the bench to make his way anywhere else, but his eye catches a sign for a restaurant. Fingers crossed, he reads the menu, and –

“Yes! Cheeseburgers!” His fist pumps the air before swinging the door open and making his way inside.

If there’s one thing he knew for sure, it was that world-saving always looked a lot more feasible with a full stomach.
